Reduce Energy Costs with a New Garage Door

How a New Garage Door Reduces Energy Costs

Your garage door does more than enclose your garage and keep your belongings inside protected. It acts as an insulator. Every garage door, just like insulation products, is assigned an R-value which is a measure of its ability to keep heat in or out. The higher the R-value, the better insulator it is. This is only part of the several ways a new garage door can reduce your energy costs. Other ways include:

  • U-Factors: U-factor measures how quickly heat is transferred through an object. The lower the U-factor, the longer it takes for heat to transfer through. Look for a garage door with a U-factor of 0.35 or lower.

  • Seal Crevices: When replacing your garage door, you can also take the time to seal cracks and crevices that air may be coming through. Check the sides of your garage door, windows, and crevices around the garage. Sealing any sources of leaks can make a big difference in your heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

  • Replace Garage Door Opener: Replacing your garage door is also a good time to replace your garage door opener. Newer openers are more energy efficient and will not break down as frequently as older ones.
