Weather Proofing your Long Island Garage Door

Everyone is talking about the Arctic Outbreak and by everyone we mean just the media. Yes it’s going to be a cold winter here in Long Island NY but with the way the media tells it you think its end days coming. In reality, winters here in Long Island are pretty cold, humid and snowy. With that in mind, it’s important to make sure your home is working at maximum efficiency in order to reduce heating costs and improve comfort.
When people weatherproof their homes everyone remembers the usual suspects, front and side doors and windows. But many people forget about one of the largest sometimes uninsulated parts of their homes, the garage door.
4 keys ways to weather proof your Garage Door
Install Insulation Sheets
You can purchase a weather proofing kit from any hardware or Home DIY box store. There are two types, solid polystyrene sheets and soft spun fiberglass. All you need is a utility knife to install the sheets. They hang on the doors with either clips or pop right into place.
Install Weather stripping:
Most garage doors come with weather stripping. However time and elements will cause wear and tear in the form of stripping and cracks. Check the stripping to make sure it doesn’t need to be replaced. Install a bottom seal to keep drafts from coming in underneath the door.
Upgrade Your Door
If you have been kicking around the idea of upgrading your door. There is no better time than now to invest in an insulated door. Many doors can be stained to look like real wood or any material you choose. Insulated doors are also designed to be durable and weather resistant. Insulated doors greatly reduce heat loss through your garage.
Insulate Home Door
Now that you minimized the amount of air getting into the garage, you will also need to minimize the amount of air from the garage entering the home. Make sure the door leading to home has its own weather stripping as well as a draft blocker at the bottom of the door.
